Begin With A Dream

We all dream, and often our dreams include a new home, sometimes even a new home built to our specifications. Big, small, modern, traditional. There are so many possibilities. Some of my best memories are of a home I leased. It was leased out of desperation and unexpectedly, the only home available before the school year began in the town we had spent months choosing. It looked like a box on the outside. An ugly box. But inside, oh inside, it was beautiful. The owners had lived there and they had made it their own. It had white marble tile floors, a black marble fireplace, and a row of windows overlooking a lake. It was elegant. It opened up design possibilities for me that I had never dreamed. Someone had taken a simple box and made it into something beautiful. It is possible. So, begin with a dream.

Decorating With Home Accents

My home is my haven. It is my daily resting place and refuge from the cold winds of winter and the hot sun of summer. During spring and fall when it is beautiful outside, that beauty resides within my home, the sweet scents and gentle breezes blowing through my open windows. Not only is my home my shelter, it is simply beautiful to me. I love the colors of the walls, different in each room, the tiles on the floor, selected after much reflection, and the window treatments, loving picked over months of time.

Then, there are those other things – our home accents. Home accents are those little things, or sometimes big, that make our homes our very own. A home accent can be as simple as a dish of sea glass collected from the beach to a collection of postcards from places we have visited, 100-year-old barn wood from a family barn sitting in the garage of an urban home to valuable artifacts collected on an overseas trip. I don’t believe that home luxury is necessarily time-consuming, labor-intensive or expensive. It doesn’t even mean owning a home. It is about love, appreciation and sharing.

Finding Your Home Decor Style

Begin by understanding your personality and your personal style. Are you a minimalist or do you prefer a cozy look? Do you like traditional or modern decor? Assess your home; do you live in a Manhatten apartment or a Mediterranean-Style home? A bungalow or a ranch? Ground yourself in some basics, such as the use of color. I have provided a link to “Before & After: How to Design Cool Stuff” on the Links page. It is a web magazine. They offer a free 25 page article called, “How to find the perfect color.” Look for inspiration in beautiful home decor magazines. Architectural Digest represents a variety of architectural styles. I have a friend who lives on a ranch in Texas. The June 2009 Architectural Digest featured American Country Houses. This issue was a perfect place for her to look for fresh ideas which complemented her personal decorating style. Finally, call a professional interior designer, if possible. Look at the Links page over time for links to top designer’s websites. With some knowledge, several resources at hand and possibly a designer, you will be able to create an environment that resonates with your personality and exudes style.
